Phoenix Elementary School's current building was erected in 1954, with Robert Keeney serving as architect and Frank Fairweather as contractor. The school has gradually expanded from a one-room schoolhouse to its present facility.

The school’s primary wing brick building was enhanced in 1974 with the addition of the round building containing eight classrooms and a large media center, as well as the gym/cafeteria. Four more classrooms were added in 1995. A multipurpose gym and the School-Based Health Center were built in 2002. A cover for our intermediate playground was added in 2004 and a walking/running track was added in the spring of 2008 through funding from the PES PTA and the Home Depot.

In August of 2015, a new play structure was installed thanks to various grants and PES staff fundraising. In 2017, a bond measure was passed and a new HVAC system, security features, and remodeling of our PES campus were installed over the summer of 2018. We are very excited for the added security for our students and staff.

  • PES has roughly 300 students in Grades K-5.
  • PES has one of the longest-running Two-Way Bilingual Immersion programs in the state.
  • PES serves a diverse population (55% Hispanic, 38% white, 5% multiracial).
  • 33% of PES students are English Language Learners,10% are migrants, and roughly 90% qualify for free and reduced lunch.
  • Nearly 37% of PES students lost their homes in the 2020 Almeda fire.
  • Phoenix Elementary's efforts to stay connected, rebuild, and help our students succeed include creating a culture of belonging, utilizing our Community Care position and Bilingual Family Liaison to help families with basic needs, and revitalizing our instructional systems to focus on academic success. 
  • The PES student enrichment opportunities include a Neurodiversity Club, Girls on the Run, Oregon Battle of the Books, and an after-school choir.
  • Thanks to Student Investment Account funds, PES has been able to re-establish a thriving music program with K-5 music and fifth-grade band.
